ABOUT US

Incorporated in May 2011, I AM not the MEdia is a 501C3 non-profit organization founded in Charlotte, NC. The organization strives to promote self pride with its national campaign for all ages, and educate teens (ages 13-18) and young adults (ages 19-24) through programs and educational events that teach media literacy.

MISSION

Our mission is to empower teens and young adults to become conscious viewers of the media, critical decision makers, and to embrace their individuality and uniqueness through media literacy and media creation.

 

VISION

Our vision is to create new generations of confident, conscious and healthy media consumers and media makers.

WHAT IS MEDIA LITERACY

Media literacy is the ability to read hidden and unhidden messages in the media. Media literacy also involves the ability to understand how media messages influence your life in a healthy and/or unhealthy way. MEET THE 

FOUNDER

Jimmeka Anderson, Founder and Executive Director of I AM not the MEdia, is a full time Outreach Coordinator at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and a candidate for a Master’s in Arts in Educational Media with a focus on New Media Literacies and Global Perspectives at Appalachian State University in December 2017.
 
Jimmeka is the  Chapter Lead for North Carolina for the national Media Literacy Now organization that tries to get media literacy mandated in our school systems through legislature. She also serves on the national Student Leadership Council for the National Association of Media Literacy Education (NAMLE), was a presenter at the 2017 National Media Literacy (NAMLE) Conference in Chicago, and is a part time instructor at Carolina School of Broadcasting where she teaches courses in New Media/Social Media, Media Literacy, and Media Ethics.
